SUSTAINABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT

The Hawke's Bay Marathon takes in the highlights of Hawke’s Bay, including the waterfront, cycle trains, quite country roads and private vineyards.

Over 8,000 participants competing in either the full marathon, half marathon or 10km option they find themselves running through local cycle trails, quiet country roads and pass vineyards and orchards - all finishing at the impressive Elephant Hill Estate & Winery where they can celebrate their efforts in style.

Closed Loop teamed up with Ironman to take care of their cleaning and waste management needs for the 2021 event. Throughout the event, 59.5m3 of waste was collected. All waste was hand sorted on site into 10 separate waste streams. Closed Loop then sent 48.5m3 of that waste to be recycled, composted or upcycled, giving this event a fantastic waste diversion result of 81.5% in their first year working with Closed Loop.
