OHAKUNE MARDI GRAS 2020
SUSTAINABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT
Ohakune’s famed Mardi Gras returned in 2020 with Audiology (the promoters behind some of NZ’s biggest festivals, including Bay Dreams and Soundsplash) at the helm. The festival proved a smash hit, selling out and re-establishing itself as New Zealand’s premiere mid-year festival in one of the North Island’s most well-known winter wonderlands. Mardi Gras is an event like no other, which takes its ‘street party vibe’ from famous Mardi Gras-style events around the world. Expect colourful and vibrant outfits; dancing in the streets and good times galore.
2020 marked the third year that Closed Loop Site Services provided the Cleaning & Waste Management service for this event. The goal for 2020 was to increase the waste diversion to over 70%.
Throughout the event, the team hand sorted 35.5m3 of waste into 8 different waste streams to achieve a diversion rate of 83.1%
RECYCLING RATE: 83.1%
29.5 cubic meters recycled

WAIMARINO PONY CLUB
This year Closed Loop engaged a local community group to assist with the clean-up of Ohakune Mardi Gras - The Waimarino Pony Club. The group got to learn and experience what Closed Loop did on site to make Mardi Gras such a sustainable event. They saw firsthand, and helped keep their community and the environment at the base of Mount Ruapehu clean and beautiful. Here’s what they had to say about their experience,
“The Waimarino Pony Club were proud to be part of the Mardi Gras clean-up. Great for the kids to see how the rubbish was sorted and dealt with. We were also impressed with Closed Loops commitment to leaving our town cleaner than before the event. Thanks again, we look forward to next year.”

"Closed Loop working at Ohakune Mardi Gras 2020 were a pleasure to work with and they did a great job. They were very open and willing to share their plans and method of managing the waste at the event. Ethical Waste staff had the pleasure of attending the event and to see their efforts and methods in action. The team of litter pickers keeped on top of the litter and their sorting team did a great job of delivering clean waste streams to the Waimarino Recycling centre. Ethical Waste looks forward to seeing them in 2021."
