OHAKUNE MARDI GRAS 2021
SUSTAINABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT
Ohakune’s famed Mardi Gras returned in 2021 with Audiology (the promoters behind some of NZ’s biggest festivals, including Bay Dreams and Soundsplash) at the helm. The festival proved a smash hit, selling out and re-establishing itself as New Zealand’s premiere mid-year festival in one of the North Island’s most well-known winter wonderlands. Mardi Gras is an event like no other, which takes its ‘street party vibe’ from famous Mardi Gras-style events around the world. Expect colourful and vibrant outfits; dancing in the streets and good times galore.
2021 marked the fourth year that Closed Loop Site Services provided the Cleaning & Waste Management service for this event. The goal for 2021 was to increase the waste diversion to over 83.1%.
Throughout the event, the team hand sorted 35.9m3 of waste into 8 different waste streams to achieve a diversion rate of 83.3%

RECYCLING RATE: 83.3%

WAIMARINO PONY CLUB + RAETIHI PRIMARY SCHOOL
This year Closed Loop engaged two local community groups to assist with the clean-up of Ohakune Mardi Gras - The Waimarino Pony Club and the Rawtihi Primary School. The groups got to learn and experience what Closed Loop do on site to make Mardi Gras such a sustainable event. They saw firsthand, and helped keep their community and the environment at the base of Mount Ruapehu clean and beautiful.
